Trapagaran's Mining Heritage.

'La Arboleda' village

Locating within the administration of Trapagaran is located the jewel of all the mining villages, "La Arboleda", established in 1877 for the purpose of housing miners who arrived from all over the Peninsula. With a network of parallel streets enclosing the central church ("La Magdalena", 1896), it throws up wooden houses surrounded by an attractive landscape of lakes created from the old mine-workings. Equally remarkable dating from the last decade of the 19th century, is the old mining hospital, which will be restored shortly. Nearby are the mining villages of "La Reineta" (connected to municipal capital by one of the only funiculars in the Basque Country), "Barrionuevo" and "Burzako". In the latter we presently see newly created dwellings from the former stable blocks of the mining company Orconera.

Old mining dwelling

Among the earliest relics of mining activity must be mentioned the group of "haizeolas" or mountain ironworks near to the swamp of Oiola. Some of them have been the subject to archaeological investigation, dating the activity of these installations between the 11th and 13th centuries. These ironworks were the means used to transform iron ore into metal, prior to the construction of water-powered works on the Basque Country riversides.
